Which Coaching Program is Right for You? How Do You Learn?

Back in 2010, I signed up for Marie Forleo’s B-School coaching program. I was just SURE that it was what I needed for my boudoir photography business at the time. I knew I wanted to get my message of helping women out to the world far and wide and OMG it was going to be SO PERFECT …

And I never made it past the first week of the course.

Somehow, something always kept getting in the way. That said, I’ve recommend B-School to a number of people, because I have seen so much success come out of it for my friends; it just was a terrible fit for me at the time.

A few months after I signed up for B-School, I met Jeff Jochum at a workshop in Houston. During the introductions, I said that I was a wedding photographer with a tone that rivaled that of the Charlie Brown schoolteacher (wah-wahh-wah-wah-wahhh) — and then I said OMG! I have this GREAT idea! I want to market my boudoir photography to MOMS!!! Jeff just looked at me and asked me if I heard it. I did. It was a pivotal moment for me. At the end of the night I told him if he ever wanted to return to Houston to teach, I would love to host him at my studio. He took me up on it a month later. I was HOOKED. He wasn’t offering one-on-one coaching at the time, but several of us all but begged him to work with us, and by the end of 2010, I was one of his coaching clients. It changed my life, completely. I have since gone on to mentor and now offer Team-X Coaching to others.

Both of these programs were focused on building a business around you, one that makes you happy. (At the time that I signed up, B-School was “Rich, Happy & Hot B-School.) So why was one a complete failure for me, and the other one completely changed my life?

The big difference for me, and the reason why I hired Jeff, was that I need accountability. I need someone to answer to. Sometimes I need some tough love. I need having video meeting set up every two weeks that I must attend, and then having homework that I’m required to complete. While it isn’t about the money, that was a factor too. I need the money pain in my wallet as well – Marie Forleo’s B-School was less expensive than coaching with Jeff, and when you know you’re paying for it? You’re a lot more likely to get it done.

I need a high-touch experience. I learn by reading, writing and talking things out. I can’t get that from an online course that is self-guided.

(Just to be clear – the whole process of Team-X Coaching and Marie Forleo’s B-School are very different. I’m not comparing what they offer, but how the process works, and how I learn.)

If Jeff had sent me on my way with 6-8 months of videos and a number of worksheets? I would not have gotten as much out of it. Oh, who am I kidding?! I wouldn’t have gotten anything out of it. I would have never made it past the first week. I have a proven history of that, not just with B-School. I’ve done it with other online programs as well. One week. Two if I’m lucky. That is my track record.

How do you learn?

Stephanie’s kids may be two of the luckiest children in the world. They go to a school that is entirely built on the foundation that everyone learns differently, and the first step to learning is knowing HOW you learn. Their curriculum is then built around that. I truly think it might be the most brilliant school ever.

Not everyone learns the same way though. For some people? They can dig in, go through it on their own, and come out on the other end with exactly what they need. They can drive themselves through a course without the need for accountability. They don’t need to ever talk to anyone else about it.

I teach myself a lot of things. Thinking about it? That may be another issue for me with the online course – I get online, and I discover 73 other things I want to read at the same time. I can’t help it. I’m a curious person by nature, and I love to learn! I have to have a deadline though – without that accountability, I won’t ever get there.

Which Vivid & Brave Coaching Program is right for you? How do you learn?I’ve had several people ask me recently what is the difference between our Rediscover You Life+ Group Coaching and our Solo Adventure Program, and which one they should pick. At the core? They are the same programs. We send out the same journal prompts, they are both focused on uncovering the layers of you, the foundation of building a business that will make you happy.

If you know you’re the type that needs accountability, that needs to talk it out? That needs to know that once a week you will be on a call and you’re expected to have your homework done? Then Group Coaching is where it is at for you!

On the other hand, if you’re a great self-starter and you know you’ll stick with it for more than one week without having those weekly calls and the extra personal touch? Then you, my friend, are a Solo Adventurer!

If both feel like they are a good fit for you? Well, then you have to choose. Choosing is hard, but it has to be done. Only you can decide. (Yet another hard lesson that Jeff Jochum taught me. Damn it, Jeff!)

Our Spring Group Coaching group closes on SUNDAY of this week! The next group starts on Monday, March 24, 2014. There are still a few seats left, but if you want in? Now is the time to do it! We have not set the date for when the next group will start, but it will be at least a few months from now. For all the details, visit the Life+ Group Coaching page. The Solo Adventure Program doesn’t have the same space limits, and it starts every Monday for the next several weeks.

The world deserves your voice, and you deserve to have a business and a life that make you truly happy. We want to work with you to help you get there.
