What To Do When You Feel Worthless

I woke up with a heavy feeling of despair in the pit of my stomach. My soul felt completely deflated. It was a day like any other day: a day where my mental health was going to kick my ass, whether I liked it or not.

I see a psychiatrist on the regular, and am in a constant flux of trying new medications out to see what sticks. Some days are harder than others. Some days are even harder than those days. For a long time, I thought feeling worthless and hopeless was normal for a bad day. Luckily, now I know that isn’t true. Even so, on my bad days, I know that I need to take care of myself, and you should too.

If you find yourself feeling the same way, see a doctor. Seek out a psychiatrist. Get your shit sorted out. There is no shame in having a mental illness, nor is there shame in getting treatment. It’s the best gift you can give yourself, Read over at this website for more information. We all have bad days. Some of us have worse than others, especially if we have a mental disorder of some kind. If you are hardwired for emotional instability, and are having “one of those days”, then follow this simple formula to help ease the pain a bit (after seeing a specialist, of course).

Step 1

Breathe. Take a deep breath in, hold for a few seconds, then let it out fast. Make a noise if it helps. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Deep breathing is scientifically proven to help ease anxiety and emotional woes. It can help put things into perspective, or at the very least, get our minds off of things for a bit.

Step 2

Slow down. Take a fucking break. Do something nice for yourself. Have a bath, take a nap, or call a close friend. Do something relaxing and good for you. You don’t always have to be productive and getting shit done. You are allowed to do nothing. You are human. You will have bad days. It’s inevitable. Admit that today is a hard one, and take care of yourself.

Step 3

Start again tomorrow. Call tomorrow your do-over. Remind yourself that tomorrow is a new day, and today is the day to take a break and sleep.

Sometimes the best solution is the easiest one. Admit that today is a wash, and start again tomorrow. Sleep, then sleep some more. Drink lots of water, eat some fruit, get some fresh air, then go sleep again. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, if not more so. Take care of you.
