Be the Beauty You Want to See

Be the beauty you want to see in the world. That was the meme that appeared on my Facebook wall a few days ago. Wise words from Mahatma Gandhi. It really made me stop and think about what kind of person I really am. I mean – I like to think that I am generally a good person, but then I took a deeper look at myself and I have to say – I’m a little disappointed.

Be the Beauty You Want to See in the World

The other day a car pulled out in front of me causing me to slam on my breaks to avoid hitting him. Not only was he turning across traffic, but he failed to even look at my disgusted face and hand thrown in the air because of the sheer shock I had at his audacity to pull out in front of my car. I mean, it’s not like he didn’t see me. He started to go, stopped, and then continued on like I wasn’t even there! THE NERVE OF THIS MAN! I resigned to let my annoyance by his lack of driving skills go because I needed to get to my destination, at least there wasn’t an accident right. Here’s where it gets interesting, at the VERY NEXT STOP SIGN I came to, guess what I did? Yup – pulled right out in front of someone when I should have waited!

I TYPICALLY don’t give people on the corners money. I am happy to buy them a drink or food, but I rarely just hand them cash. I’ve paid for gas for one person only to watch him walk in and cash it out then leave. It’s that kind of act that makes me leery to hand out money. I tried giving one guy a hamburger once and was told “get away from me with that, I make more money than you do in a year” I was flabbergasted!!!

I often think – when prayer requests go out on Facebook – do the people who are commenting ACTUALLY say a prayer for them? I had a thought the other day that if everyone in the world ACTUALLY acted the way they THINK they act, image the kind of world we would be living in!!! I think I am a kind person. I help people when I can. I hold doors open for people, especially if they have their arms full. I say excuse me. I buy water for people on hot days (I live in Vegas, I swear the heat here is in competition with Hell) especially when I see they are on the verge of heat stroke. I volunteer in my community. I am always willing to help a friend in need for last minute babysitting. I don’t say these things to boast, but as an eye opener to myself that I’m not as good as I think I am! Especially when I have my hypocritical moments like the car incident a few days ago. So I’m making a point to try harder to actually be the person I think I am.

Are you as good as you THINK you are? I’m willing to be you aren’t. Here’s the thing though, we aren’t meant to be perfect about everything. We are human, we make mistakes. I think the goal is to be MOSTLY like how we think we are. If we can really act the way we THINK we do MOST of the time, the world will be a better place. Gandhi said that in order to see change in the world, we have to be that change. If you want to see kindness, be kind. If you want to see honestly, be honest. If you want to see love, be loving. If you want to see… you get the point. We don’t have to be perfect, we’re allowed to be human every once in a while, just try!
