What Are You Waiting For?

I only have one question for you on this lovely Friday afternoon:

What are you waiting for?

Maybe you’ve been waiting for the perfect time. The exact moment when the fates align and the heavens conspire.

Maybe you’ve been waiting for a chance to breathe, expecting that your spouse, kids, friends, or job might all quiet down just long enough so you can really tune in and listen to the little voice in your head. The one that’s telling you you are ready for a change. Yeah, that one. You’ve been letting everything else drown her out.  She keeps telling you that you deserve to follow your dreams. To fill your emotional cup. To live -your- life and tell your truth. And the cacophony of your life going on around you is making her hard to hear.

Maybe you’ve decided to just ignore it all. Fires are going on all around you, and you’re just letting them burn. The curtains are going up in smoke, by the way.

For a long time, I was floating in the pool. I had an entire daydream worked out for this analogy. I’m on a pink inflatable raft. I have a bottomless pina colada in my hand with a bendy straw and a tiny umbrella. I’m wearing my sparkly sunglasses. The sun is beating down on me, and I’m just floating. Not a care in the world. My business was drowning. My health was suffering (all that sun!) My bills were getting ahead of me. And still, there I was, sipping my drink, and thinking that things would just fix themselves.  I was waiting for a magical life fixing fairy. She was going to make it -all- better.

Except she never showed up.

Just like the fates and heavens will never align and conspire.

And the people around you are not going to give you that chance to breathe. The volume of your life isn’t going to turn itself down.

And once a fire really gets going, it won’t burn itself out.

Life is only going to change if you change it.

You’re only going to end up where you want to be if you start walking the path to get there.

Your dreams will stay dreams – unless you start to pursue them.

I got out of the pool. I put down my bottomless drink. And I got to work. And the amazing thing was the minute I really committed to focusing on it, it all started falling into place. The pieces fit. Things worked. Not always easily. Not always without some tears and struggle. But I had to actually do it.

What are you waiting for? Now is as good a time as any. Now is the BEST time. Go.

I’m the sort of girl who you meet for coffee and end up pouring your entire heart out to. The friend you come to when you need someone to call it straight. No bullshit. No extras. Just truth.

I’m a communicator. That’s a PC way of saying I like to talk, but I also spend a lot of my time listening, and over the years, I’ve developed a sense for subtext – how one or two words can change your entire message, what people are really trying to say and how to weave the varied layers of your story into one cohesive brand message that your clients fall in love with.

When I'm not acting as editor in chief for Vivid & Brave, you can find me geeking out over words here.
