They Picked Me?!?!

Wow! Is this real? I am writing for Vivid & Brave! I am super excited and honored to be counted worthy to be amongst such amazing women! I admit that I applied to be a contributor on a whim and really didn’t think that it would become reality. When I applied it was more about putting myself out there, be vulnerable, type of moment. Never did I imagine I would get the email saying WELCOME!!! I am so glad I did and I am super excited to be here!

I thought I would use my first post for you to get to know me a little better. So let me start by letting you know up front – I am a SUPERHERO!

Ok, not really. But I really think it would be awesome to be able to stretch in any way imaginable like Elastagirl from Disney’s Incredibles. Mind control would be sa-weet too, even if it’s only so I can get my kid to clean his room. No, the only super power I have is… well me!

I am a working single mother of one awesome kid. His activities alone keep me busy, and he doesn’t even have that many because I hate the idea of scheduling every moment of our lives! Being a mother is the best “job” I’ve ever had – or will ever have for that matter. I believe that motherhood is a divine role and raising children to be honorable, contributing members of society is the best accomplishment any woman can have. Not even my accomplishment while serving in the Marines compare to that of raising my son. David O. McKay said one of my favorite quotes, “No success can compensate for failure in the home.” Don’t we see this in our society? Children being brought up without any morals or ethics leaves the world a dismal place indeed. That’s why I strive every day to be the best mom – supermom.

Being a Supermom

I’m a “new” single mom – so I am really just trying to figure things out. I’m not afraid to ask for help and I’m pretty sure there are tons of people out there in my same (or similar) circumstances. So – I decided to start an online support group for single parents. I’m not sure where it’s heading now, but it’s a place for us to come together, share horror stories and lift one another. Single parenting is hard! Unfortunately it is also very common. Why not have support for it? Right!

I also own a handmade business, making photography props for newborn and infant photographers. It’s relatively new, but I love it! I love photography, but don’t fancy myself a photographer. I love babies, but my baby is not a baby anymore. So I found a way to make the best of my loves!!! I mostly knit or crochet items like: hats, bonnets, blankets, outfits and such for photographers to use during their sessions. Most of these items can be used for everyday use though. I love watching a movie and knitting up a new hat or blanket. It keeps my hands busy and gives me something to do. It’s not like I don’t have a bazillion other things to do!

So now I guess I get to add writer to my list of superpowers! Score!

My life experiences aren’t generally unique I would say. Somewhere, some awesome lady is reading this thinking she’s failing or wants to give up. I get it. I’ve been there. I have that failed marriage, I have felt I was failing at motherhood and failing at life in general. Fail, fail, fail, fail, fail – NO!!! Do we have moments of disappointment? Yes. Do we have moments in life that don’t go the way we plan? Absolutely. Those moments do not make us a failure. What they make us is human! In each of those situations, we have the opportunity for growth and learning. Those moments mold us into who we are and are destined to become. And that is anything but failure.

I am looking forward to writing for Vivid & Brave! See ya next time!
