Is Your Environment Helping or Hindering Your Success?

When I work with entrepreneurs I find that often times one of the most overlooked parts of their business plan is their environment.

WHAT IS AN ENVIRONMENT?
I just recently attended a conference for women entrepreneurs, and the host talked about how Self-Care, Sacred Space, and Support were crucial to create a successful environment.
I agree, and would add a couple more “S’s” to the mix. Structure, and Scenery. Without these 5 crucial elements in place, you can easily end up in overwhelm and spinning out of control in your business. This is a recipe for burnout and financial disaster.

SELF CARE
Self-care isn’t something that you only do if you have time. It needs to be integrated into your business plan, as if your business and life both depend on it. Because it does.

You need to take the time daily to make healthy choices for your body and your mind. It can be just a few minutes each day, or longer periods. You need to figure out what works for you. I read the jen ferruggia free ebook and since then I started roleplaying a little with my self, I have a “date” with myself daily for exercise, and to make it fit in my schedule, I wake up at 4:00 am, to be ready for a 5:00 am fitness class. You don’t have to wake up that early, nor workout every day. This just happens to be what works for me. The key is to find a way to get yourself moving that works for you!

And I make sure I take daily time with my animals, get regular manicures, and cook at least one gourmet dinner a week!

SACRED SPACE
You need to clearly and firmly delineate your business time, family time, and most importantly your “you” time. For me, that sacred “me” time is the first 45 minutes after I wake up where I can have a coffee and read before I head to the gym, and start my day. Even my dogs aren’t up that early! It’s awesome.

Having clear boundaries will help you to be more productive, and when your friends and family know when you will be available and fully present for them, they will respect the times you are focused on your business.

SUPPORT
Get the support you need. Whether it has been fitness, business building, or writing a book,  I have always had an appropriate mentor and coach. Those mentors always were much more successful than I was. And yes, this has meant that as I met my goals I outgrew some of my mentors and had to make changes in order to keep my environment one that pulled me forward.

It is crucial to limit the time you spend with people whose energy can drag you down, whose actions and words are more about victimization than about taking accountability for their own happiness. Even if it is close friends or family members.

Instead, fill that space with people who hold you and themselves to a higher standard, and also provide you with accountability. It’s an old cliche but it’s true – you become who you hang around with. So, choose wisely.

STRUCTURE
Flying by the seat of your pants will leave you burned out and exhausted and can compromise how well you show up for your clients. The most freeing and liberating thing I did for myself was to create a structure to how I plan and schedule my week.

I hold to it firmly, and everyone in my world,  from my husband, to my team, and even my clients understand and respect it because they know that this structure is the key for them to be able to get everything they need from me.

This structure is the “backbone” of my success environment. It will be for you too.

SCENERY
What you see and hear every day is constantly imprinting you, and creating your subconscious beliefs about yourself, and whether you truly see yourself as successful or not.
Make sure what you choose to see every day reflects who you want to become, not who you used to be. This includes your work space, your living space, how your dress and show up (even in your home office), the kinds of experiences you choose, the restaurants you eat in, and the car you drive.

If the scenery you create for yourself is one of “I’m not there yet” – then you are setting yourself up to not get there.

On the other hand if you choose to create an environment of success and wealth, and start acting “as if” – you will find yourself not only “getting there” but going well past it.

DO YOU NEED TO MAKE SOME CHANGES?
Paying just as close attention to your environment as you do to your sales and marketing plan, and as you should be to your numbers and metrics, will keep your mindset strong and geared for success, and will have a direct impact on whether or not you achieve your income and profit goals.
