Growing up, I was a voracious reader. I had a book – everywhere-. At the dinner table. On the bus. In the bathroom. I read every extra minute I had. I loved reading so much that I did book reports weekly instead of monthly in fifth grade. I devoured stories like my life depended on it.
I’m not sure when that changed, but last year I think I managed to get through a total of two books, start to finish. I really miss reading. I miss getting lost in a great story and disappearing into my head for a little while. I just can’t seem to convince my brain that we should sit down and do that. I still really want to be a reader. One of my favourite places to be is the bookstore. I add new books to my Goodreads ‘want to read’ shelf on a regular basis.
And I fill up my shopping cart every few months and order myself a box of books.
Welcome to my secret shame. I order a book, I squeal with delight when it arrives, I read the first 10-15 pages, and then I put it on the shelf, never to be picked up again. And then – I recommend that book to other people. Yes, folks, I’ve probably recommended a book to you that I never came even close to finishing.
Thankfully, I appear to have pretty good taste. Or really polite friends.
Any books you’ve read and loved? Or pretended to read? Tell me about ’em! My shopping cart is empty again…
Things You Should Know Thursdays was inspired by a Vivid & Brave journaling prompt – “Things you should know if we’re going to be BFFs”. If you share a thing I should know about you, be sure to come back here and leave a comment so I can link to you too! The hashtag for social media is #TYSKT.

I’m a communicator. That’s a PC way of saying I like to talk, but I also spend a lot of my time listening, and over the years, I’ve developed a sense for subtext – how one or two words can change your entire message, what people are really trying to say and how to weave the varied layers of your story into one cohesive brand message that your clients fall in love with.
When I'm not acting as editor in chief for Vivid & Brave, you can find me geeking out over words here.
